TILTED THUNDER HISTORY

Tilted Thunder Roller Derby (TTRD) is a Seattle, Washington based banked track roller derby league. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run by a volunteer force of skaters and league members committed to promoting and raising awareness of women's roller derby, especially banked track roller derby.

TTRD is composed of strong, friendly, intelligent, enthusiastic people from all walks of life pursuing emotional growth and physical strength by challenging their perceived limits. As a league, we also wish to promote mental and physical empowerment, development of skills, loyalty on and off the track, individuality, and friendship - throughout the entire sport, both locally and nationally.

Tilted Thunder acknowledges that we are on traditional lands of the Coast Salish Peoples, the first peoples of the PNW. The Coast Salish People are a large, loose grouping of many nations with numerous distinct cultures and languages, some of whom include the Duwamish, Snoqualmie, Muckleshoot and Sammamish tribes. These tribes and nations are still here, continuing to be stewards of their ancestral lands and waters, to honor and celebrate their heritage and pass down their knowledge to future generations.

Tilted Thunder Roller Derby is the only banked track league in the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 2008 by Chelsea Shepherd (Mae Lay) and Courtney Stone (Sally Von Trample) as Tilted Thunder Rail Birds, the league recruited the first group of skaters in 2009 and completed construction of our banked track in 2010, making us the 7th banked track league in the nation. Tilted Thunder skated in our first inter-league flat and banked track bouts in 2010. In 2011, Tilted Thunder became one of the founding members on the Roller Derby Coalition of Leagues (RDCL) which is the ruleset that governs banked track leagues. In 2022, we officially changed our name to Tilted Thunder Roller Derby.

TTRD All-Stars have skated in many competitions and tournaments over the years including the RDCL’s national competition, Battle on the Bank, Chingadera, and Jantastic to name a few. We’ve participated in Battle on the Bank since 2010 and placed 3rd in 2014 and 2015, 4th in 2016 and 2017, 5th in 2018 and 2019.

As a nonprofit organization, we strive to give back to our community and volunteer our time at several organizations including KEXP, Foodlife Line and local churches and shelters among many others.
